Channing Tatum and Clint Eastwood have at least one thing in common: They’ve both been on national television talking to thin air.

But Tatum, 34, wasn’t reenacting Eastwood’s 2012 Republican National Convention “empty chair” dialogue when PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night. He was reuniting with an old friend. An imaginary one.

Kimmel told Tatum that he’d brought the actor’s imaginary friend, Boy, on the show, prompting Tatum to act like he was reunited with a long-lost pal. The pair embraced, sat down and reminisced about their youthful diet of peanut-butter-and-Cheeto sandwiches, among other topics.

This was some elaborate piece of performance art. Tatum has actually spoken about Boy before. In June, he told GQ that “I think I just lived in an imaginary world I wasn’t doing it because I was desperate for friends. I had friends.”

You can next catch Tatum in another imaginary world, that of the Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending, which comes out Feb. 6. Check out Tatum and Boy’s full segment from Kimmel below.
