She may officially turn 66 on Wednesday, but Caitlyn Jenner is celebrating her first year living publicly as a woman.
“Technically it is my ‘first’ birthday, and I got to share it with a couple of my daughters today,” Jenner said at Logo TV’s Beautiful As I Want To Be web series launch party on Tuesday in Los Angeles. “We had a wonderful lunch. But, certainly, since coming out, this is my first birthday.”
Jenner donned a black, tight, mid-length dress with a sparkling clutch and black open-toe heels as she arrived at the event among other transgender advocates and stars like Candis Cayne, Geena Rocero, Jen Richards, Laura Jane Grace and Chandi Moore.
Although the event was held in honor of the web series’ Wednesday premiere, all eyes were on birthday girl Jenner, who filmed much of the festivities for the second season of her docuseries I Am Cait.
The women held a brief birthday celebration for Jenner, singing “Happy Birthday” and bringing out cake. The former Olympian gave a brief speech, commending Rocero, who hosts and executive0produces the web series, for her work in the transgender community.
Jenner was all smiles as she chatted with Cayne, who said the 66-year-old is celebrating her first year “in her new life.”
Cayne, 44, spoke highly of Jenner, telling PEOPLE that Jenner has “changed the conversation” about the transgender community with her “bravery.”
“I’ve been at this for 20 years, you know what I mean? And when I first started there was no conversation at all,” Cayne said. “We were a back-alley conversation, or a Jerry Springer conversation. [Caitlyn] has changed it in the fact that everyone in the world knows her name, and knows that she is transgender, and seeing the way that she has embraced that means a lot me.”
Cayne added that even though Jenner does not want to be the “spokesperson” for the community, “she is.”
“She is doing it really well,” she added, “and she’s saying the right things, and starting to walk the walk, and talk the talk.”
