Sex is no necessity for new Bravo reality personalities Tina and Tarz.

The stars of Newlyweds: The First Year – who chose to have the first 12 months of married life filmed for TV – have become like “brother and sister” since tying the knot, Tina tells PEOPLE.

“People are going to laugh at me for saying this and think I’m absurd, but I really feel like for us, sex is really just a bonus. We’re really best friends. We’re very fulfilled with our chemistry.”

The singer adds, “I used to have so much lust for Tarz. And now I just look at him like this goofball dork. Looks wear off. You just wake up going, ‘Oh, there’s my dorky husband.’ America’s so fixated on ‘How many times are you doing it? Oh, my God, only once?’ To each his own. I’m not judging.”

But it also happens to be circumstance that keeps the pair from getting freaky between the sheets.

“A lot of it had to do with the fact that I was working,” Tarz explains. “I have a start-up company and I did lots of traveling. I was working 20 hours a day for months and months and months.”

And while Tina is content with no sex, she does have one important reservation about the lack of it.

“I don’t blame him, but at the same time, it’s incredibly frustrating because I’m not 20 and I have maybe a half of an egg left,” she said. “So that was a huge struggle [during filming].”

When asked if their sex lives have improved since filming ended last year, “I’d say no,” Tarz admits. “It’s nonexistent.”

Tina, on the other hand, is a bit more hopeful.

“Their company just got funded, so I think now’s the time where he might have a little bit more boinky-boink time,” she says.

Lovemaking woes aside, the pair battled other obstacles during their filming journey.

“It was kind of a s––––y year,” Tina explained. “We had a year with tragedy and drama and stuff happened that just sucked. You’ll see me lose my mind because of it. We hope that people can relate and not feel alone.”

The new series debuts on May 6 at 10:00 p.m.
