Stephanie March is heartbroken over the allegations that she is spreading rumors about her estranged husband, celebrity chef Bobby Flay.

The couple separated last month, but as news of the separation leaked out, the split quickly turned contentious, with reports that Flay had cheated on March surfacing in the media.

“Stephanie is terribly upset by what she has been reading in the paper,” the Law & Order: SVU actress’s lawyer Deborah Lans tells PEOPLE in a statement.

“I would say that what Bobby’s lawyer and his friends are saying is a combination of speculation and projection on their part,” she adds.

A rep for Flay previously told PEOPLE: “We will continue to refrain from responding to the continued efforts by certain parties to spread rumors and innuendo.”

“This specific allegation was in a letter sent from one attorney in this case to the other,” the rep continued. “It was written and then leaked specifically to try to insert this story into the press, and that’s unfortunate. Even more unfortunate is that all of this is being done in order to renegotiate a prenuptial agreement that was agreed to over a decade ago and never amended during the marriage.”

It’s a difficult time for March, who recently underwent surgery and is living with her cancer-stricken mother while she recuperates, as well as “coping with all the recent revelations,” says Lans.

Her attorney adds that there are “profound issues” with the couple’s prenuptial agreement, which was signed three days before their wedding.

“I’m confident a court will consider the agreement to be unconscionable,” Lans says. “Stephanie hopes people will respect her privacy and be sophisticated enough to read through what’s coming from the other side.”
