First a Barbie, and now, black-ish.

Zendaya is set to hit the small screen (again) on the Oct. 14 episode of the ABC hit, playing a friend of Zoey (Yara Shahidi) who develops an unlikely bond with Dre (Anthony Anderson).

The episode, entitled “Daddy’s Girl,” centers on a new holiday Dre creates called “Daddy’s Day,” which “celebrates everything Father’s Day is not,” ABC says. Zendaya’s character, Resheida, helps Dre try and get the holiday off the ground – for one bittersweet reason.

“My character connects with Anthony’s character because she hasn’t had a dad in her life,” Zendaya tells PEOPLE. “So I had some great scenes with him.”

The 19-year-old says she’s “been a fan of the show for a long time, so when the opportunity came to have a guest role I definitely wanted to do it. It’s so great to see diversity on TV, especially in prime time slots, and I loved being a part of that.”

She also loved hanging with the cast, which includes several peers (Shahidi is 15, and co-stars Marcus Scribner, Marsai Martin and Miles Brown are 15, 11 and 10, respectively).

“The kids are so sweet and we had a great time taking selfies and laughing together,” she shares. The cast itself was “so much fun, always joking around and having a great time. I had a great week.”

Catch Zendaya on black-ish next Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
