Kaitlyn Bristowe and Shawn Booth created a social media firestorm when a Snapchat photo of them together in bed went viral weeks before the finale of The Bachelorette. The trouble is, it was all a big mistake.
“We felt so bad,” Bristowe, 30, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “There are people out there who don’t want to read spoilers, and we felt like we ruined it.”
It was such an accident in fact, that at first, neither of them knew who had made the unintentional post.
“I thought it was me who did it,” Booth says. “I got out of bed and picked up my phone and I had all these Twitter notifications and I’m like, ‘Oh my God!’ I couldn’t breathe. I bent over the bed and I’m like, ‘I did something really bad!’ ”
“I was like, ‘You’re an idiot,’ ” Bristowe says of her conversation with Booth, 29. “And then he looked at it and [said], ‘Babe, it was you!’ ”

Though some speculated at the time that Bristowe meant for the post to go wide, she insists she didn’t.
“If I wanted it to be out there, I would have done it in a sneaky way. I would not have done it through my Snapchat to get in a bunch of trouble from the network,” she explains. “That’s the funny thing. People were like, ‘Kaitlyn is not that dumb.’ And I’m like, ‘I kind of am!’
