The Bachelorette‘s Kaitlyn Bristowe opens up about getting intimate with a suitor and stands by her decision. Subscribe now to hear what she has to say about having sex on the show in this exclusive interview, only in PEOPLE!

Kaitlyn Bristowe knew that her choice to get intimate with Nick Viall on The Bachelorette would be met with controversy – however, she’s standing by her decision.

In a chat with PEOPLE Now, Bristowe, 30, was candid about the reason for the mass outrage that took over the Internet on Monday: “Because I’m a woman. I think it’s a double standard, for sure.”

Indeed, Bristowe is certainly not the first person in the Bachelor franchise to reach the next level in a relationship with one of the contestants – however, she is the only one to be so candid about it.

The dance instructor acknowledges that “some people have their beliefs and what they think is right and wrong in a relationship.” However, she adds, “I was just trying to stay true to who I am and how I would be in a relationship.”

During Monday’s episode, Bristowe was shown experiencing a lot of guilt over having sex with Viall, but she wants to clarify the nature of that guilt: “I don’t feel ashamed about the act of sex in the relationship,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s just such a confusing world to live in where it’s this gray area of what’s right and what’s wrong, and when do you sleep with somebody and talk about it? Or do you just wait 10 more days and not talk about it after the Fantasy Suite?”

Adds Bristowe, “I felt guilty about the timing. I had a very strong connection with [Shawn Booth], and I felt guilt from that because that’s not something I would do in my everyday life. I’m in this crazy world where nothing really makes sense to me.”

For all of the online criticism she’s received from keyboard warriors across the nation, Bristowe is relieved to have the support of her Bachelor family. “A lot of the people in the Bachelor family have got my back. All the people that I love and care about have got my back, so that’s all that really matters.”
