Few people can truly relate to how Shawn must have felt when Kaitlyn Bristowe delivered the uncomfortable news that she had slept with fellow suitor Nick on Monday night’s episode of The Bachelorette.

But former contestant J.P. Rosenbaum has been in his shoes – and gives him credit for handling things so maturely.

“I would have never been that calm,” Rosenbaum, 38, told PEOPLE Tuesday night at an Ocean Drive magazine event at The Shore Club Residences in Miami. “Never, ever ever. I give him so much credit for the way he handled it.”

In fact, J.P., who is happily married to season 7 Bachelorette Ashley Hebert Rosenbaum, says if he was in the same situation, “I would have lost it!”

Ashley, meanwhile, tells PEOPLE she thinks it was the setting that forced Shawn to remain calm, joking, “I think he would have lost his s— if he wasn’t on TV. His ears were boiling!”

That’s not to say the twosome think Kaitlyn did the wrong thing by sleeping with Nick. In fact, both of them call the slut-shaming that followed her actions “ridiculous.”

“People have one-night stands when they are dating. They do it, who cares, it’s human nature,” said Ashley, who called Kaitlyn a “cool chick.”

“It’s one of those things nobody talks about, so for her to bring it to light, it’s refreshing,” she continued. “I feel like people can relate to the realness of her.”

Husband J.P. couldn’t agree more. “Nothing different happens in real life, nothing … She’s not doing anything differently than any one of us would do in real life.”

He explained it’s not easy trying to have a relationship on national television.

“Are you under a microscope on the show? A hundred percent. So is everything going to be magnified by a million? Yes. But, we don’t see her any differently and we’re glad she is this way.”

The happy couple, who are new parents to 9-month-old son Fordham Rhys, recently moved to Miami and are enjoying a very “normal life” in their new home – which is something J.P. never saw coming when he went on the show in 2011.

“I was going away for two weeks on a vacation, have a story to tell, and that was the end of it,” the construction manager said.

Ashley, a practicing dentist, calls being the Bachelorette “a lot of pressure”, and agrees with her husband’s sentiments. “Now that I know him, he went on there just for fun.”

Luckily, the process worked for the Rosenbaums, and the two are now devoted fans of the show.

“He loves every second of it,” Ashley says of J.P.’s viewing habits. “LOVES it.”
