People.com Entertainment TV 'The Bachelorette' Contestant Draws Criticism for Joking on Twitter About Being Gay Clint Arlis made the jokes after ABC aired a promo that insinuated a relationship was blooming between himself and JJ Lane By Amanda Michelle Steiner Published on May 29, 2015 08:35 PM Share Tweet Pin Email For the first time in Bachelorette history, a same-sex relationship may be brewing between two of the contestants vying for the heart of the Bachelorette. That’s what ABC has teased, at least, in a promo for Monday’s episode that suggests Clint Arlis might have some feelings for fellow suitor JJ Lane – and that he only wants to stay on the show to pursue those feelings and not Kaitlyn Bristowe. In the 30-second spot, Arlis is dubbed the “Brokeback Bachelor,” referencing the 2005 love story between two sheep-herders played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal‘s characters. Following the fervor that erupted, Arlis jokingly apologized to his father and, in a followup, wrote, “Before I field any questions about Brokeback Bachelor rumors, I would like to just say that I am a proud, 30-year-old woman and it’s 2015. You monsters.” It was those Tweets that had users accusing him of homophobia – not to mention similar criticism that ABC received for the promo. https://twitter.com/BMcNamara_BSB/status/604382638397353984 ABC and Bristowe have yet to comment. The Bachelorette airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.
