Viall, 35, revealed to PEOPLE in this week’s issue that he recently met with Higgins and his fiancée Lauren Bushnell for dinner, where he was given honest advice from the Bachelor couple.
“The advice that Ben gave me that probably stuck with me the most was if I’m not lucky enough to meet someone that I really feel in my heart that I want to spend the rest of my life with, don’t be afraid not to get engaged,” Viall told PEOPLE.
He continued, “I thought [that] was a very genuine bit of advice and something that I definitely took to heart.”

Though the Wisconsin native has not yet found his match through an ABC reality series – he was the second runner-up on seasons 10 (Andi Dorfman) and 11 (Kaitlyn Bristowe) of The Bachelorette and attempted to find love on season 3 of Bachelor in Paradise – he is hopeful of his upcoming season 21.
“As much as I hope to meet someone, I’m not going to just ask for the sake of asking,” Viall told PEOPLE. “You know, it’s not like the last one standing.”

Host Chris Harrison told PEOPLE of ABC’s decision to choose Viall for the position: “He has just become that perennial, second place guy who wants to find love and is as sincere, if not more sincere, than anybody about finding it.”
Added Harrison: “It’s about giving him his chance to find love. Who deserves it more than him?”
Season 21 of The Bachelor returns to ABC in January.
