The new Bachelor star Arie Luyendyk Jr.was photographed filming a group date at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura, California, this week for his upcoming season of the reality franchise.

Luyendyk – a professional auto racing driver – seemed to be checking if his dates could handle the lifestyle, with the women wearing racing suits and taking part in a demolition derby.

The 35-year-old helped the contestants secure their helmets after they spray-painted their vehicles.

Filming kicked off at the famed Bachelor mansion last week, with series creator Mike Fleiss teasing on Twitter, “@ariejr has got some tough choices to make tonite.”

Though Luyendyk faced some backlash since being named The Bachelor‘s leading man, he told PEOPLE that he’s “not concerned [with] what people think.”

“I’m just focused on the outcome,” said the reality star, who famously earned himself a “kissing bandit” reputation on Emily Maynard’s season of The Bchelorette. “I want to find my person and will do whatever it takes!”

The Bachelor premieres on ABC in 2018.
