What's It Like to Be in The Astronaut Wives Club? One of Its Stars Shows PEOPLE
Every last detail was thought through on Astronaut Wives Club. From the clothing to the matching nail polish and lipstick. Love these bright pinks and reds!
My character Rene was considered to be "the rebel" by the other wives, according to Lily Koppel's book The Astronaut Wives Club. She wore this bright rose-print dress to one of the wives' first photo shoots when all the other ladies wore pastel shirtdresses as requested. Here is my furry child enjoying a cuddle before I go off to shoot the scene!
Love these ladies. We had such a blast together bonding on- and off-camera playing the Mercury Wives.
This was definitely one of my favorite looks. I loved the romper and the shoes. We always paired a bangle with Rene's outfits as her signature character look. We got the idea from a photo of the real Rene. And of course, the '50s glasses just make this outfit – and maybe the blue belt too.
Wilson Bethel, who plays my husband Scott Carpenter on the show, was such a joy to work with. We had a ton of fun and often came to set amazed at how realistic it looked – like this one, with the background and the replica cars and our outfits complete with hats and gloves. Everything made us feel very much in the moment of the era.
The food was just as colorful as Rene's wardrobe in Astronaut Wives Club! I'm pretty sure I was only brave enough to sample just a few things off the table. Some were a little too adventurous for me – like a banana bacon hollandaise dish …
One of my favorite sets, and outfits – this is one of the '60s outfits. I loved the block colors in both this dress and the kitchen cabinets. Every day when I put these outfits on, I wondered if I could possibly get away with going down to the local supermarket in these get-ups without looking out of place.
Another blend of colors splashed together in the most put-together way. I especially loved that the heels back then were actually comfortable because they were not made as high as they are these days. These yellow sandals were one of my favorite pairs of shoes.
We just couldn't get enough of the swimsuits here in the picture. Marveling at how these swimsuits look like rompers nowadays that you walk around in – not just at the pool! Oh how times have changed!
This is a photo taken in the hair trailer as we were creating Rene's later look – the late '60s going into the early '70s. We changed the wig for this look to have the longer hair and slightly different color.
A photo of the classic '50s Rene look we created for the show. I just couldn't help but snap a million pictures of all these outfits and looks. I marvel at how wonderful a job the entire team did putting together the look of this show. And how often do get to wake up in the morning and look like this?!
