Amy (Duggar) King‘s parents are officially ending their marriage after nine years together, but their “heartbreaking” split doesn’t come as a complete surprise for the TLC star.

“They’ve had a roller-coaster relationship for as long I can remember,” King tells PEOPLE of her parents Deanna Duggar and Terry Jordan.

“I’ve always been the mediator between them, instead of just being their daughter I was also the counselor.”

In court documents obtained by Radar, Jordan who wed Deanna in 2006, claims they separated on Dec. 20 due to Deanna’s “intolerable” treatment.

While King is still enjoying life as a newlywed after tying the knot to husband Dillion in September, she says the news of her parents’ split breaks her heart.

“I’ve learned it’s not my place to try and ‘fix’ their relationship anymore,” she says. “They are grown adults and I am, too. My main focus is to be a good wife, a help- mate, and Dillon and I work everyday to keep our marriage strong and healthy. Love isn’t a feeling, it’s a choice.”

Despite her most recent family drama, King says her other half worked hard to make their first Christmas together as a married couple extra special.

“He went above and beyond,” she says of her gifts, which included a brand new car and a rescue kitten named Wednesday . “I couldn’t ask for a better husband.”
