Sonika Vaid has often been praised for her powerful vocals while competing on American Idol, but the 20-year-old has also been criticized for appearing to be a bit over-rehearsed.
In other words, she needed to let go.
And let go she did on Tuesday’s episode of the reality singing competition.
WARNING: Spoilers from Tuesday’s episode of Idol ahead.
After it was announced that she and fellow constant Tristan McIntosh were in danger of going home, Vaid took to the stage to perform Demi Lovato‘s version of “Let It Go” from the Frozen soundtrack.
“At the end of the day, Sonika just did a better job tonight. Plain and simple,” judge Harry Connick Jr. told PEOPLE after the performance.
But it wasn’t just the vocals that contributed to her stellar performance.
“Why does wind look so good on TV?” asked Urban.
“She was living,” added Jennifer Lopez before she addressed Vaid. “You are a fighter.”

The judges ultimately chose to save Vaid, and McIntosh – who sang a version of Martina McBride’s “Independence Day” – was sent home.
“I just feel so blessed to be here right now,” Vaid said on stage. “I never thought I’d make it this far.”
But surviving elimination also meant Vaid wasn’t done for the night.
“There’s another song!” she said as she processed her status in the competition. “Oh my God!”
The Top 5 will perform next Thursday (at 8 p.m. ET) on Fox.
