Thirteen years ago, America fell in love with Kelly Clarkson when she won the first season of American Idol.

And now the show is bidding adieu with a fifteenth (and final) idol being crowned at the end of next year’s farewell season, which is sure to make everyone feel a little nostalgic.

In the season premiere‘s opening sequence shared exclusively with PEOPLE, judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. reflect on the impact Fox’s singing competition has made over the years.

American Idol changed people’s lives,” says Lopez. “Not just the contestants. Not just me. But the people watching it because it made them believe that they could do anything.”

The final season of American Idol premieres Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
