When Finn Wittrock signed on to play Dandy Mott on American Horror Story: Freak Show, he wasn’t exactly sure what he was getting himself into.

“The writers kind of had the idea of a general arc, but we were all just kind of figuring it out as we went along,” Wittrock tells PEOPLE of playing the coddled mama’s boy turned killer on season 4 of the FX series.

But Wittrock dove into the role with abandon and soon found himself in, as he calls them, “trippy” situations.

“Killing was pretty surreal. But I’m glad it came at the end of our scenes together so I had gotten to know her beforehand. I’m glad I didn’t have to break the ice by stabbing her in the throat,” says the actor, who was also involved in the gruesome end of a character played by Matt Bomer. “Matt was having a good experience all around, so being caked in blood and getting your arms cut off was kind of like icing on the cake.”

But Wittrock – who will also have role in the upcoming fifth season of the anthology series, American Horror Story: Hotel – says the most outrageous scene he was involved in during the season freaked out even the experienced crew on the set.

“The random sound guy said, ‘I’ve never in all my years seen that.’ I think it was the day I bathed in my mother’s blood,” Wittrock says. “I think I have to say that today really took the cake on the crazy shit I’ve seen. A lot of the crew isn’t exactly informed beforehand what is involved in the scene so they are very surprised when all of a sudden I’m just naked talking to Gabby Sibide.”
