When it comes to traveling, Jason Case and Amy Diaz are pros.

In 2013, the dating couple competed on The Amazing Race‘s 23rd season. During the competition, they traveled more than 35,000 miles to four continents – and walked away with the show’s $1 million prize.

Last month, the couple added another destination to their passports when they tied the knot in the Dominican Republic. The ceremony took place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana.

Surrounded by about 130 guests – including several other Amazing Race contestants – the couple said their vows in a fairy-tale wedding. (That’s not just a figure of speech. Case had proposed to Diaz with a glass slipper.)

Diaz, 30, wore an ornate Elie Saab gown; Case, 35, was dressed in a dark suit.

The fairy tale theme extended to the reception, where the couple’s first dance was to “La Valse de L’Amour” from this year’s live-action Cinderella.

But, in true reality TV fashion, there was an unexpected twist: Case and Diaz had actually gotten married in a secret wedding at Case’s family church a month earlier.

“We wanted to share this experience with Jason’s grandparents,” Diaz tells PEOPLE. “His grams is really sick, and there was no way she could make the trip to the Dominican Republic. It was as intimate as a ceremony could get – my mom, Jason’s parents, his grandparents and my maid of honor.”

During the big reception in the Dominican Republic, Case and Diaz announced the secret wedding by showing a video.

It all went just as the couple wanted. “It was an intimate and perfect day,” says Diaz.

The current season of The Amazing Race concludes Friday at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
