Update: In June 2015, Caitlyn Jenner came out as a transgender woman. This content was written in May 2015 before Jenner publicly announced her full transition.

During his monologue at the ABC Upfronts on Tuesday, Jimmy Kimmel took aim at Bruce Jenner, one of the network’s most high-profile faces following his coming out as transgender last month on 20/20.

Talking about the network’s upcoming programming slate, Kimmel said that ABC “has people of color, women and men turning into women.”

Referring to this year’s format of The Bachelorette, the premiere of which will have both Kaitlyn Bristowe and Britt Nilsson battling it out for the chance to find love with one of 25 suitors Monday, Kimmel said: “I say forget more Bachelorettes – we need more Bruce Jenners at this network!”

Continued the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host: “That Bruce Jenner interview was unbelievable. Huge for us. An enormous hit. Seventeen million people tuned in to watch his chat with Diane Sawyer.

“That’s why we’re making this solemn promise to you: Starting this fall, someone will change genders every week,” said Kimmel, 47, to laughter from the audience. He noted that he didn’t want to “spoil” the end of ABC programming chief Paul Lee’s presentation, “but I do want to say that we are all so proud of him, and he is so brave.”

Kimmel then referenced Work It, a short-lived ABC sitcom that aired in 2012, the premise of which had two men dressing up as women in order to (by their logic) keep their jobs in a bad economy. The men were not experiencing gender dysphoria. According to Kimmel, “the show should’ve been our first clue.”

This isn’t the first time a high-profile celebrity has poked fun at Jenner: At the iHeartRadio Music Awards in March, Jamie Foxx joked that the Keeping up with the Kardashians star could be a “his-and-her duet all by himself.”

Jenner’s stepdaughter, Khloé Kardashian, said Foxx’s joke was a “low blow. I think it’s very mean. Guess that’s what he felt the need to do for a little press.”
