Veteran 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft is coming clean about his secret fling with a New York City lawyer.

“I had an extramarital affair that was a serious lapse of personal judgment and extremely hurtful to my wife and family,” he tells PEOPLE in a statement. “And for that I have nothing but regret.

“My wife and I are committed to each other and are working hard to get past this, and consider it a private matter.”

The National Enquirer first reported the infidelity, claiming the CBS journalist initially met 41-year-old lawyer Lisan Goines, who’s also married, at the St. Regis hotel bar in Manhattan back in 2011.

“This was a personal failure, not a professional one, and had no impact whatsoever on my job as a journalist,” he says.

The longtime news correspondent married author and journalist Jennet Conant in 1991 and famously confronted Bill Clinton over his womanizing during the former president’s 1992 election campaign.
