Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley is an American singer and actor. He is one of the most famous artists of all time, dubbed the "King of Rock 'n' Roll." Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948 to get his start in music. His debut single, 1954's "That's All Right," originally by blues singer Arthur Crudup, became a hit. Over the course of his career, he amassed 114 Top 40 hits – including "Hound Dog," "Love Me Tender" and "All Shook Up" – and won three Grammys. Presley also starred in 31 feature films, including 1957's Jailhouse Rock and 1962's Kid Galahad.

Presley was drafted into the U.S. military in 1957, after he was famous. During his time in Germany, he met then-14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu, the daughter of an Air Force captain. The two met in 1959 and were married from 1967 to 1973. They share daughter Lisa Marie Presley. In 1960, he was honorably discharged from active duty. His film G.I. Blues was also released that year; its soundtrack spent 10 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts and stayed there for 111 weeks.

Presley was managed by Col. Tom Parker, who took over as his manager in 1956 and negotiated the sale of his contract to a major label. Presley became a massive star working with Parker, with his single "Heartbreak Hotel" becoming his first song to sell more than one million copies.

In his later years, Presley's health declined due to years of prescription drug abuse and an unhealthy lifestyle. He died suddenly in 1977 at from a heart attack.

This summer, Baz Luhrmann's film Elvis, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, will be released.
