Zooey Deschanel’s line for Tommy Hilfiger is here, and it’s just what we expected: girlie, classic and totally appropriate for her on-screen alter ego Jess Day. And — no surprise for the stylish New Girl star — adding fashion designer to her résumé has always been a dream.

“When I was in high school I made my own clothes and I grew up creating a lot of my own looks,” Deschanel shares. “I would think up patterns myself. Having the opportunity to work on this collection was incredibly fun.”

The line, aptly named “To Tommy from Zooey,” features 16 dresses (priced between $98 and $199 — get a preview below) as well as accessories. “We looked at all of the designs that I’ve been wearing over the past several years and analyzed them. Then we distilled everything down and mixed it with the Tommy DNA to transform it into our own collection of dresses. It’s a mix of mod and nautical, which I like to call ‘modical,'” she says. “There are a lot of great little hidden details, like pleats with unexpected patterns on the inside. There are structured and short pieces and very clean lines. Each piece is very mod and also very American-inspired.”

Deschanel and Hilfiger first bonded when he made her sweet custom gown for 2013 Met Gala. Now, the actress reveals that she totally wanted to break the “punk” dress code. “The theme of the gala was punk, so I went with seersucker because I thought, ‘If everyone is doing punk, then punk is no longer punk!’ Naturally, I had to do something traditional.”

Hilfiger has a high regard for Deschanel, whom he feels perfectly represents the target Tommy girl. “This collection is for the woman who understands that the key to modernizing the classic, preppy look is by updating it with unique patterns and pops of color,” he says. “Each piece in this collection embodies Zooey’s confidence and playful sophistication, fused with the youthful and optimistic spirit of the brand.”

“To Tommy, From Zooey” will be sold at select Macy’s locations starting April 14 and on from April 21. What do you think of the collaboration? Which pieces are you loving? Share your thoughts below.
