Zendaya on Launching an Androgynous Clothing Line: Wearing What You Want Is 'A Way of Being Outspoken'
"My thing is anybody can wear whatever they want," says the star
Zendaya further cements her role as style superstar this week as she launches her first ever fashion collection, Daya by Zendaya.
The line, featuring a range of on-trend jumpsuits, athleisure pieces, dresses, jackets, pants and more, is actually an expansion of her shoe line, which she launched earlier this year. And now that her clothing line is available to her fans on dayabyzendaya.com — including her more than 33 million Instagram followers — she’s beyond pumped (watch her discuss for our “5 Questions” video series above!).
“This line is very much true to who I am, my identity and my style,” the 20-year-old actress and singer tells PEOPLE during an interview featured in this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday. She worked with her longtime stylist Law Roach on the project, as she did with her shoe line as well. “It’s totally my vibe—urban elegance,” she says of the collection.
While discussing the pieces, she also says she worked hard to do three things: (1) lower prices — they range from $18 to $158; (2) expand sizing — sizes range from 0 to 22; and (3) cross gender lines — it’s for both men and women.
“My thing is anybody can wear whatever they want,” says the star. “If you’re a dude and you want to wear a dress, then wear it. The whole point is [to wear] whatever you feel confident in.”
Her favorite items are the jumpsuits, she says. “Because they’re one-piece, you don’t have to worry about picking out a shirt or pants,” she says. “They’re comfortable too, so it’s like wearing pajamas.”
Of course this is totally representative of the star, because by this point she’s proven that she totally fearless and can wear anything. “I’m not afraid of wearing what I want,” she says, “and I think that’s another way of being outspoken.”
So what’s her ultimate style advice? “There are no rules,” she says. “That’s why I love fashion and find it so exciting. Don’t let people’s opinions affect how you live. If I allowed that to affect the way I dress, I’d wear a T-shirt and jeans every day. There would be a lot of things I’d miss out on.”
