The actress opens up about her millennial wardrobe on the hit TV show
Actress Sutton Foster may be Benjamin Button-ing IRL, but that doesn’t mean slipping into a millennial-ready wardrobe on the set of the hit TV Land show Younger comes naturally. In fact, Foster admitted that transforming into editorial assistant Liza (a 40-year-old divorcée who returns to the publishing world pretending to be 26) is scary — especially when it comes to the “short-shorts” and swimwear she’s wearing for season 3, premiering tonight!
“I had to wear a bathing suit in an episode coming up which was terrifying,” she told PeopleStyle at the Younger press day in N.Y.C. “But if I felt like 100% confident in everything I was wearing, it wouldn’t feel right. I think Liza is still, not 100% confident in the skin she has put on so it all is sort of working together. So the short skirts and the high frickin’ heels — some of the more awkward things are actually kind of helpful.”
Plus, she still wants to swipe some of Liza’s clothes for her own off-duty wardrobe.
“There’s this awesome mechanic-like jumpsuit that I wear this season. It was like my denim Spanx. It was like, ‘I think I am gonna wear it again.'”
Foster credits the show’s head wardrobe stylists Patricia Field (the legendary designer and costume artist on Sex and the City) and Jacqueline Demeterio for pushing her to not only have fun with style but to develop her own off-screen style identity.
“When I first met with Pat and Jackie back on season one they were like, ‘Tell us a little bit about your style,’ and I was like, ‘I have no style! I am a jeans and t-shirt type of gal. I am a blank canvas. You can kind of do whatever you want,'” Foster, who wears high-fashion looks from Gucci, Proenza Schouler and A.L.C. this season, shared. “That’s what’s really great about the fittings. I have been learning so much more about what’s in style and what I love is that everything is in style these days. I feel like there isn’t just one trend. I wear an array of decades and styles and different types of shoes and pants, everything is different. I feel like the clothes have a sense of humor which I love.”
As for staying youthful on the outside, the 41-year-old star maintains she takes good care of herself with diet an exercise, but the real secret is having a positive headspace.
“I think youth or the idea of youth comes from inside and I do think it’s happiness,” she said. “I try not to take life too seriously. I struggle with anxiety, I struggle with a lot of social pressures but I try to stay incredibly open-minded and I honestly feel like my outlook into the world is incredibly hopeful and optimistic and maybe naïve — I like that. I am a little bit ‘puppy dog and rainbows.’ I often say I am skipping down the field with flowers. I feel that way on the inside. Sometimes I will look in the mirror and go, ‘Oh shit,’ but on the inside I feel like I am still 15.”
Her outlook on life has helped her explore her character Liza, who is heading into a love triangle in season 3, torn between her boss Charles and current 26-year-old hipster boyfriend Josh.
So what team does she land on?
“I have such chemistry with both guys and everyone is like, ‘Who do you choose,’ and I’m like, ‘It’s impossible for me to choose,'” she said of her love interests on the show. “I would genuinely love both of them. And they’re both right for her.”
Tune into Younger tonight at 10 p.m. on TV Land and tell us in the comments: #TeamJosh or #TeamCharles?
