For Trinidad-born, Queens-raised rapper Nicki Minaj, cultivating her larger-than-life style required some trial and error.

“I was dressing in Tommy Hilfiger baggy shirts and Boss jeans,” she tells
of her high school wardrobe.

It took meeting someone who “dressed like a tiny lady — pantsuits, heels, lots of makeup” to inspire her to experiment. “I had never seen myself made up before. I didn’t want to wash it off,” she says. “I felt like I had one day to live this fantasy of being a glamour girl.”

Years later, she’s trademarked a kind of Gaga-on-Prozac look: wigs, mega lashes (“When I don’t have my lashes, I feel naked,” she says) and a whole lot of color. And while the majority of her wacky looks are custom made by Japanese designers including Shojono Tomo, Minaj is not unfamiliar with brand names.

At one time she was spending $50K a month on designer duds, the magazine reports. “And I bought tons of Vuitton bags,” Minaj adds. “When you’re a young girl from Queens, you’re going to stock up on those bags.”
