Snow White and the Huntsman is not only action-packed, it’s fashion-packed! Nine-time Academy Award-nominated costume designer Colleen Atwood, who managed the movie’s innumerable looks, recently spilled all of the details on the film’s fierce wardrobe to FabSugar.

Kristen Stewart‘s Snow White has countless fighting scenes, so it was important for Atwood to choose practical looks for her. “I knew from the start she had to have shoes she could run in,” Atwood explained. “[And] since she falls down and goes ass-over-elbows a million times, I had to have some kind of legging to cover her up.”

In the beginning of the film Stewart wears a long dress, but Atwood made sure to layer it with leggings underneath. “When the huntsman cuts [the long dress] off it still looks really great — like a tunic over the leggings,” she said. “It gives her a great silhouette but she’s able to do action.”

Charlize Theron‘s Queen Ravenna looks were less dependent on practicality, but still difficult to create. “[Her] wedding gown took three weeks [to make] with four people working on it,” the stylist revealed. “It’s a lot of handwork.”

And since Theron’s costumes took so long to manufacture, the actress didn’t get to try them on until right before she shot her scenes. “It was intense, but it went really well,” Atwood said.
