Where Did Rihanna's Hair Go?

The singer debuts what appears to be a pixie a day before the MTV VMAs

She found love — but she lost her hair! Rihanna did away with her extra-long locks this week, opting for a pixie cut with piecey bangs.

“We’ve been talking about going short for a little while now,” her stylist (and Motions Global Ambassador) Ursula Stephen tells PEOPLE. “We actually planned to cut it next week but, I just felt like — why wait? Let’s do it today! She was ready for short hair again.”

The singer flaunted her short new ‘do on Wednesday in Los Angeles, where she was rehearsing for the MTV Video Music Awards. The buzzy pop star is set to open tonight’s show with what’s being touted as a pretty wild performance.

Rihanna’s hair has faced a lot of changes this year: there was the bleached blonde look, the half-shaved head, the dreadlocks, then the long black locks. (And she hasn’t even tried her dream hair color yet!)

“Her hairstyle typically changes depending on what’s on our agenda, what she’s wearing, or how she’s feeling,” Stephen said earlier this year. “We take it day by day and event by event, and usually will both bring ideas to the table. It’s always a collaboration.”

Tonight will be a big night for the pop star: not only is she performing, but she’s up for five awards — tied for the most nominations with former flame (and collaborator) Drake. Needless to say, we’re excited to see what kind of hairstyle she’ll shock us with tonight: her new pixie, or something even more jaw-dropping? Knowing Rihanna, our bets are on the latter.
