Now that we’ve gone over the best and boldest outfits and the standout makeup trend from the MTV Video Music Awards, let’s talk hair. From Vanessa Hudgens‘s boho braid to Gigi Hadid’s slicked-back style, we’re taking a closer look at some of the most noteworthy mane moments of the VMAs.

When Chrissy Teigen first made her red carpet appearance Sunday night in a completely sheer Marchesa design, we didn’t realize her loose side-swept updo was actually an intricate braid. Cue our surprise when she turned around and gave us this stunning view from the side.

Inspired by “Brigitte Bardot mixed with a Bond girl,” celebrity hair stylist Jennifer Yepez gave Gigi Hadid a voluminous, slicked-back do to pair with the supermodel’s freshly bronzed skin (she just got back from vacay, FYI!) and her canary yellow Emilia Wickstead ensemble. To get the look, Yepez teased very little at the crown to create an undone style rather than a “coiffed look,” then she used a ghd Air Hairdryer and Platinum flat iron to lock the look into place.

Britney Spears styled her hair into a high braided ponytail, revealing just a hint of her mermaid-inspired blue and purple highlights in the mix.

For her first hairstyle of the night, the Bad Blood singer stepped out on the red carpet with her girl squad wearing this low knotted ponytail, which she teamed with a metallic sequined houndstooth crop top and pant set and an even cooler graphic cat eye liner look. She soon ditched the knotted style for her signature fringe for a surprise performance with Nicki Minaj.

Hudgens channeled her inner boho babe with a sweet crown braid, complete with a few dainty floral accessories placed in the plait. The rest of the star’s extensions were given a soft wave to perfectly pair with her floral appliqué Naeem Khan gown and sultry shimmery eye shadow.

And lastly, Rita Ora, who is back to her signature blonde hue, rocked an intricately knotted half-up, half-down do, courtesy of her hair stylist Chris Appleton, who used Matrix StyleLink products. It’s easily one of the sleekest styles of the night.
