If you’ve got #shorthairproblems but still crave a braid, celebrity hairstylist and Kérastase ambassador Matt Fugate’s got the answer. The pro, who has worked with Jamie Alexander, January Jones and Karlie Kloss, suggested a waterfall half-up style, which he says is a fresh spin on a braid for ladies with bobs and lobs — and he showed us how to get the look for our “How It’s Done” video series (watch it above).

First, he says, mist hair with a lightweight oil to add shine (he used Kérastase Elixir Ultime Spray). Then create a deep side part. Begin braiding your hair by picking up pieces of your hair on the deeper side of your part above the ear and make sure to leave out a stray piece every few braid twists. After a few inches, add sections of hair to the braid from the side of the braid closest to your crown and continue to work the braid around your head to your opposite ear.

As you finish your braid, pull it behind your ear and secure the braid with an elastic. Hide the elastic by pinning it under your braid. The final step is to spray hairspray (he used Kérastase Laque Noire) on your fingers then run them over each section for smoothness and separation.
