While it may be more appealing to see the hunky cast of the Vampire Diaries with nothing on, the show’s fans will have to be content with the sexy drama’s ultra-stylish costumes. The form-fitting shirts and leather bomber jackets that have become signatures to characters Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) are now woven into the fabric of the drama, thanks to costume designer Jennifer Bryan, the discerning eye behind the show’s chicly dark sartorial choices. “I’m a huge fan of John Varvatos–the cuts of their shirts work great on Ian,” Bryan tells “There’s an episode where Stefan stabs Damon, and Damon says, ‘Damn, that was John Varvatos.’ We actually used the label in the dialogue because it actually was a John Varvatos shirt that he had on,” she says. Bryan also reveals some challenges of wardrobe-hunting, including styling Elena (Nina Dobrev) around the character’s bite-repellant necklace. “There are times when it does limit my neckline choices,” admits Bryan. “But luckily, I knew the necklace was going to be introduced before it happened, so I made sure I locked down her look with scoops, V-necks. Occasionally, when I want to go a little higher and do a little collar or something, I have to be aware of that.” But with so many fascinating characters, the stylista has to have a favorite to dress, right? Not so much. “That’s like asking me who’s my favorite child!” she exclaims. To read more of the interview, check out, and tune into the series every Thursday at 8 p.m. EST!–David Yi
