At the N.Y.C. premiere of The Slap this week, Uma Thurman’s red carpet appearance got people buzzing, with some people commenting that she looked very different than usual. And her makeup artist Troy Surratt put any speculation to rest, speaking to PEOPLE about her “Parisienne” makeup transformation that played up her lips and kept her eyes bare. Now Thurman herself is speaking out about the moment on The Today Show.

When asked by Savannah Guthrie if she’d heard about all the buzz, Thurman seemed pretty Zen about the whole thing. “It was weird!” she said. “I guess nobody liked my makeup. I’ve been doing this for years and years and years, and people say things nice and they say things mean, and it’s just like, whatever. You take the good with the bad.”

Wednesday, Surratt told PEOPLE, “Frankly, I’m quite surprised by the conversation. By now I would have thought that we were all open to and knowledgeable of the role that makeup plays in the world of fashion and particularly celebrity, as a medium for creative self expression. I think that women should feel open and free to experiment with different beauty looks — it’s only makeup, at the end of the day it all washes off.”
