The Top 7 Style Trends of 2017

The Color Yellow
This bright and bold color became an unexpected favorite this year, thanks to dozens of stars wearing the bright shade, including Selena Gomez in Calvin Klein, Gigi Hadid in Ralph Lauren Collection and Blake Lively in Brandon Maxwell. (Perhaps stars are giving us a hint that we need more optimism in the world, today?) And, as these stars prove, the results of wearing this hard-to-pull-off hue are gloriously head-turning.

More Intense Over-the-Knee Boots
Thigh-high boots are always in season in the cooler months, as seen on Gwen Stefani and Miranda Kerr. But some celebs took the look to new levels in 2017, like Mila Kunis (in Fendi) and Kylie Jenner (in Balencaiga), who brought lampshading to the mainstream — i.e. the idea of wearing a big shirt, over-the-knee boots, and of course, no pants.

Crazy Pants
There is no trend that proliferated the celebrity world more than wacky and wild pants, each one quirkier than the next. Gigi Hadid has worn bottoms with her boyfriend Zayn’s name plastered across the butt, metallic pink wide-leg Barbie jeans and oversize silk trousers in eye-popping colors like orange and pastel blue. But perhaps her most daring decision was her $420 detachable design by Opening Ceremony, which featured legs that converted into shorts. And she’s not all: Kim Kardashian West turned sweatpants into a street style item by pairing them with high heels (usually she wore designs from husband Kanye West’s Yeezy line), while Rihanna rocked a wide-leg pair of Rosie Assoulin pants with a tight crop. Jeez, don’t all of these just make you crave a pair of simple skinnies?

Cut-Out Shoulders
Stars of all shapes, sizes and ages flocked to this flattering peekaboo neckline design detail, which appeared on everything from sleek midis to embellished evening gowns. “There’s something very provocative, sexy and sensual about that part of a woman’s body,” says celebrity stylist Law Roach, who works with Céline Dion, Zendaya, Demi Lovato and more. Some of the standout looks of the year? Viola Davis (in Armani Prive at the Oscars in February), Mila Kunis (in Cushnie et Ochs at the L.A. Premiere of Bad Moms in October) and Jane Fonda (in Elie Saab at the LACMA Art+Film Gala in November).

Saint Laurent's Sparkly Scrunchy Boots
So, this is what $10,000 on your feet looks like! As soon as these boots hit the runway in March, they became an instant favorite of fashion influencers and celebrities alike. Style trendsetter Rihanna was the first to rock these Swarovski-studded shoes in March, and since they became available online this fall — yes, for $10,000 on net-a-porter.com (though stock is low) — stars including Nene Leakes, Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild, Céline Dion and Kendall Jenner have all been spotted in the glittery, sparkly design.

Easy Mules
In a win for simplicity, these slide-on backless flats became the must-have shoe of 2017, as seen on Karlie Kloss. Many stars favored the $680 Gucci version, like Jennifer Aniston, though Gigi Hadid became such a fan of the style that she designed her own pair for Stuart Weitzman (center).

Power Suits
It was a powerful year for women speaking out and asserting their authority in the workplace and in the world, and that mentality translated to the red carpet with celebs turning to masculine suiting to make a big red carpet statement. Evan Rachel Wood kicked it off during red carpet season when she exclusively wore suits, like the velvet blue Altuzarra design she wore to the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and it didn’t stop there, with Kim Kardashian West, Daisy Ridley, Kristen Stewart and dozens more putting their own spins on this classic borrowed-from-the-boys look.
