He said it before, and he’s saying it again: Tim Gunn cannot get over the fascination with Kanye West’s “dumb” clothing line. Last year he slammed the designer (and members of his family) for their “distasteful” style, and he’s still just as bewildered by their success today. In a new interview with Access Hollywood Live, he doesn’t hold back with his critiques of Yeezy clothing — and sets the record straight on why he’ll never be attending another Met Gala again.
“I’m totally perplexed about why the fashion industry has not looked at these, frankly, dumb, basic clothes and cried, ‘hoax,'” he says about West’s latest fashion show for Yeezy season 4. “Kanye West is a sphinx without a riddle. I just don’t understand why people are so in awe. [The models in season 4] are basically wearing stretch undergarments.”
And never one to play down his true feelings, he hit the point home by saying: “I think the only thing dumber than these clothes would be the people who would buy these clothes.”
Then the conversation turned to his lifetime ban from the Met Gala (which is hosted by Anna Wintour who coincidentally embraced West’s distressed denim on the red carpet this year) and he exclaimed that he “couldn’t be happier” about it.
So how exactly did this all come about? “What happened was I was asked by a New York newspaper — it had to do with one of the season premieres of Project Runway — what’s the one thing you’ve seen in fashion that you’ll never forget?” He responded, “‘Oh, that’s easy! It was watching Anna Wintour being carried down five flights of stairs from a fashion show.’ It was a remarkable thing to see and that’s all. I wasn’t talking about her character, it wasn’t saying that these were dire circumstances, as much as, that’s what I saw and I did.”
So the day after it was printed someone from her office called and demanded that a retraction be printed but Gunn refused. “Well that would imply that it’s not true, and it is true.”
He explains that she was just trying to exit the building quickly. “She had two bodyguards who made a fireman’s lock, she sat in it and they whooshed her down the stairs in this industrial loft building because there was only one elevator and everyone was running off to another fashion show. It was about speed. So it has made me persona non grata.”
And you better bet Wintour made it very clear to him, he is not welcome to the gala ever again. “I was invited to the Met Gala at one point a number of years ago and then was informed that I was uninvited, that Miss Wintour would not permit my presence. Well, I did the happy dance. I didn’t want to go anyway — big stuffy event.”
So have they mended their relationship since the incident? He says at a dinner party he was seated next to her daughter Bee Shaffer (who he describes as a doll, who’s lovely, smart, articulate and wonderful) and while Shaffer didn’t say anything about their feud, Wintour was giving him “dagger eyes” from across the room where she was seated all night.
As if two fashion feuds wasn’t enough, he recently sparked controversy with designers saying he was “baffled” that the American clothing industry is refusing to make clothes for the average size 16 woman. (You can read up on his all critiques here.)
