On a night where stars were literally lighting up the Met Gala red carpet, we weren’t expecting a ton of real-girl beauty inspo, but Saoirse Ronan gave us major ponytail envy with her textured (or should we say “tech-tured”) look for the Manus x Machina themed night. However, it turns out the style wasn’t entirely tech-inspired. See below for hair pro Ted Gibson’s surprising inspiration — and an exclusive breakdown of the look.

Drawing references from “1960s glamour,” hairstylist Ted Gibson balanced the feather-embellished neckline of the Oscar nominee’s Christopher Kane number with a low ponytail. Initially Gibson twisted her hair into a chignon (which makeup artist Lauren Andersen shared a glimpse of on Instagram, see below). But ultimately the pro decided on a ponytail. “It started off in one direction — and went to another place,” he admits, adding, “That’s the drama of last minute hair!”

Gibson began by applying Runway Ready Volume Mist from his Starring hair care line, as well as a volumizing mousse from Kérastase and L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil on Ronan’s damp hair, then blew her out with a medium size round brush.

He then smoothed her hair with a flat iron before pulling it back, and created a seamless finish by wrapping a piece of her hair around the base of the ponytail.

All in all, Ronan’s glam squad, spent three hours together! But their session was equal parts work and play, says Gibson. “We listened to a Pandora mix of old R&B and current pop while getting the star ready!”
