You may not have a celebrity stylist to show you cool new ways to wear chokers, but who needs one when you have actual celebrities giving you fresh inspiration for the pieces you already have in your closet? Take a tip from Dianna Agron and Beyoncé to learn how to repurpose the most basic item you own, the shirtdress.

Where once your shirtdress styling choices were limited to “belt or no belt,” the piece is becoming an accessory of its own. Dianna Agron wore her La Ligne “Fluid Line” dress fully unbuttoned over an abs-baring black sheath, like the duster coat trend currently popularized by the Kardashians. She then added quirky-cool accessories, including layered necklaces and a structured bag, to tie it all together.
Beyoncé kicked the trend off (as she does) by wearing her Melissa Odabash “Paige” shirtdress unbuttoned over her print jumpsuit and platform heels. This style, which features gold hardware and front pockets, is a bit more structured than Dianna’s, which makes her dress-turned-topper serve in more of a “trenchcoat” capacity in Bey’s wardrobe.
If you’re ready to take your tricky shirtdress maneuvers to the next level, La Ligne recommends wearing the style buttoned halfway, with the arms tied around your front like a belt. But even a rookie can pull off the trend Dianna and Beyoncé are rocking — just pay attention to proportions (a fuller shirtdress over a more fitted silhouette, for instance, and roll up your sleeves) to make sure you don’t look like you’re drowning in fabric.
