The Fit 5: Tips to Feel (and Look) Like a Star!
Mariah Carey does it! Artichokes are surprisingly rich in fiber – averaging 9 grams per cup – meaning they can leave you feeling more full and less likely to snack. Most of us only get half the daily recommended 25 grams of fiber, so doubling up on servings could cut 100 calories from your day. Carey seems to know it: On a recent Oprah appearance, she talked about her artichoke-rich diet, which along with exercise, helped her gain her svelte new figure.
SHAKE YOUR BOOTY
Competing on Dancing with the Stars is a workout – Marlee Matlin says she lost 12 lbs. during this season! Gyms are catching on, too. Equinox in Pasadena, Calif., is offering the cardio workshop Dancing for Dummies, with instruction in the cha cha, mambo, tango and more, while the Sports Club/LA in Orange County has a Hot Ballroom conditioning class. Check your local gym for similar classes near you.
Get Comfy with Converse
These sneakers have been around for 100 years, but now it seems like Converse are more popular than ever. The retro kicks have been spotted on the heels of Reese Witherspoon, Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore. The company also has a line at Target, so you can burn calories while running errands and save cash.
Try an At-Home Facial
The Kinara spa in L.A. is crawling with celebrities getting ready for their close-ups. But if you just want to look like an A-lister for, say, your Facebook profile, you can treat your skin at home with the Kinara Red Carpet Facial Kit ($95). It promises to exfoliate, hydrate and beautify. Glow, baby, glow!
BAN 'FAT CLOTHES'
Consider this: Those baggy, loose-fitting clothes stored away for days when you creep up a few pounds (cupcake binges, anyone?) could be encouraging weight gain. America’s Next Top Model judge Paula Porizkova tells PEOPLE that she doesn’t have “fat pants” or “skinny pants” – just her normal size clothes – so “if I eat cookies and don’t go the gym, I won’t fit in my pants.” That’s a motivator!
