The Final Word on SAG Awards Style

Celeb stylist Mary Alice Haney gives us her picks for best of the best

We’ve rehashed your opinions and our opinions — and George Kotsiopoulos’s opinions! — but we have one more voice to consider when talking SAGs fashion: that of celebrity stylist Mary Alice Haney. She’s dressed Blake Lively, Jennifer Lawrence, Sarah Jessica Parker and more — and has a lot to say about Sunday night’s leading ladies! Here are her thoughts on the evening …

Many of the women walking the red carpet looked like they were a) either going to the prom or b) a contestant in the Miss America pageant (not necessarily a bad thing, as it turns out). The trends of the night were strapless, fishtails and black. So what were my favorites?

I was excited to see what I call the ‘Audrey Hepburn Moment.’ My favorite dress of the night was on Anne Hathaway. My friend, the über-talented Giambattista Valli, created this couture dress — I requested it for a client and was told it was on hold. (Now I know why they didn’t send to me!) Anne and the dress were flawless. Ms. Hathaway continues to dominate the red carpet.

My other favorites …

https://stipple.com/embed/25005819.jsNicole Kidman. She chose a Vivienne Westwood, and her hair and makeup made her a contender for best dressed. The sequined gown was sheer enough to make it not overdone. I also love that she paired the blue-tint dress with amazing green earrings.

https://stipple.com/embed/24993523.jsNina Dobrev. I loved the Vampire Diaries star in Elie Saab. The sheer cutout made it sexy and the cap sleeves made it chic.

Some other favorites: Jessica Chastain in McQueen — I love a redhead in red; Jennifer Garner in her gold Oscar de la Renta and Claire Danes in her one-shoulder Givenchy made us ask, “What baby weight?”; Mad Men‘s Kiernan Shipka was age appropriate but still so glamorous in her stunning Oscar de la Renta; Tina Fey is on a roll — she’s learned to dress for her body type and the Oscar de la Renta with jeweled belt was polished and sophisticated; and Viola Davis in Monique Lhuillier — this was a fabulous color for her and the Grecian style was not overdone.

The men were perfection, too! I liked that Justin Timberlake took a chance with his suit, but the boys in tuxes — Bradley Cooper, Ben Affleck, Jon Hamm and Daniel Day-Lewis — ruled the night.

One miss? I wish Sofia Vergara would choose something more edgy and cool. She has a beautiful body but tends to choose the same type of dress: sequined and booby.
