Readers raved about Tamera Mowry-Housley’s brand new curly cut when she revealed it on Instagram earlier this week, and she loves it just as much as you do. But, she tells PEOPLE, it wasn’t just a spur-of-the-moment thing — she’s been working up to this for a while.

“When you straighten your [curly] hair a lot and you put a lot of heat on it, you lose your pattern of curl,” she said in an interview promoting Scrubbing Bubbles’ “Let’s Bubble” campaign. “I had two [hair] textures. It just looked a hot mess. Your curls can’t really live free if you have that damaged hair on it. So I decided to chop it off and I absolutely love it.”

She turned to “Curl Doctor” Shai Amiel for an easier-to-maintain style and ended up with her asymmetrical bob. “I’m a mom now and I want a wash-and-go style. So the reason why I just chopped off basically all my dead hair: I wanted to start the new year, by starting fresh and just … being who God made me to be. I’ve always embraced my curls. It doesn’t mean I’m not going to go straight every once in a while. But in my everyday life I don’t straighten my hair.”

Says sister Tia, who plans to grow out her pixie without any straightening treatments, “It’s inspiring to go with your natural hair. My son, he has really big, curly hair. I think it’s beautiful when you see all different shades of black women or just any kind of woman with curly hair just kind of embracing it. I think it’s beautiful. My son has inspired me to go natural as well.”
