Stacy London’s new book, The Truth About Style, touches on some troubling topics, but it also includes a lot of fun fashion anecdotes, too.

In the clip above, taken during London’s recent PEOPLE photo shoot, the stylist and What Not to Wear hostess shares her five major rules of fashion, and obviously, they’re worth listening to.

The first? “Don’t buy things just because they’re on sale,” she warns. “Something on sale is on sale for a reason.” No matter how big the bargain, it can end up costing you even more if you need to spring for tailoring or repairs, she reasons.

While London shares several other pearls of fashion wisdom in the clip (we won’t spoil them all!), it’s the third we love best: Lock and load. “On What Not to Wear I feel very strongly about locking and loading ‘the girls,'” she shares. “If you don’t take care of them now, they will get back at you later.” She’s serious — you don’t even want to know what a ‘bummy’ is.

Hear more from London in the clip above (and in this week’s PEOPLE, on newsstands now), and tell us: What fashion rules do you follow?
