Behind-the-Scenes Secrets of the SAG Awards' Most Major Dresses
BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD
That's Not a Jumpsuit
"There's something refreshing about wearing pants on the red carpet when everyone else is in a dress," Harris's stylist Nola Singer says. "We tailored this Lanvin top and pants to fit like a jumpsuit: The waist was much lower on the runway, and we didn't wear it with the gold belt—we felt that seeing the black satin was a little more formal for the event."
Combating Wrinkles Takes Some Creativity
We discovered the fabric wrinkled quite easily," Davis's stylist Elizabeth Stewart says. "And I became obsessed with finding a solution; I ended up wrapping Viola in bubble wrap for the car ride!"
EMILY BLUNT & JOHN KRASINSKI
Couples' Coordination Is Way Cooler When It's Not a Matching Tie
Stylist Jessica Paster says that the intricate details on Blunt's beaded Cavalli Couture influenced her husband's suit choice. "If you notice, the little beaded flowers are many colors... they’re pink, they’re blue, they’re nude," says stylist Jessica Paster. "And that’s why I put John in the midnight blue Prada suit: to bring out the blue in Emily's dress."
The Secret Garden Isn't Just a Book Title
"There are small, silk rosettes with gray beaded leaves under the fold on the hip," says Bush's stylist Erica Cloud of this "magnetic magenta" Marchesa gown. The fold itself is another nod to foliage; says Cloud, "The way the fabric lays around the rosette is reminiscent of petals."
Ellie Reps the Lou
Designer Emily Brady Koplar of Wai Ming has known Kemper from back home in St. Louis since high school, and offered up more than a dozen options for the color of Kemper's velvet gown. "I had four different shades of blue, I had all the greens. I had a good 12 swatches," her stylist Jessica Paster says. "But the minute I put this on out in the light, I knew it would work with her red hair and fair skin."
It Was the Star's First Time Going Sheer
"We have never ventured into sheerness before," says the Modern Family star's stylist Tara Swennen of this J. Mendel gown. On the runway, the hand-beaded bodice was shown fully unlined, but for Bowen, "We just lined the bits and bobs!"
