Sanaa Lathan Shaves Her Head for New Role: 'I Feel So Light'
Nine months into 2017 it seems safe to officially call it: Bald heads are the new Cher hair. That’s not to say there aren’t still plenty of celebs out there rocking 40-in. extensions down to their ankles, but it seems like there are now even more who are sporting no hair at all.
What started off as just a smattering of female stars like Cara Delevingne and Kristen Stewart buzzing off their hair for their latest movie roles has now exploded into a widespread trend with everyone from Kate Hudson to Kathy Griffin going for an extreme chop.
This week, even boy band heartthrob Zayn Malik, known for his luxurious locks, went full-on cue ball. And now there’s one more actress to add to that already extensive list: Sanaa Lathan, who debuted her new look on Instagram on Tuesday.
Over the course of the past month or so, the actress has been featuring a wide array of fresh styles on her social media account as part of her role on Netflix’s forthcoming new movie Nappily Ever After, based off the novel by Trisha R. Thomas. And once you know the plot of this particular film, the multiple quick turnarounds of cuts and colors begins to make sense. Lathan has been cast in the lead role as Violet Jones, a woman with a high-powered job, a live-in boyfriend, and a seemingly perfect life which begins to completely unravel after an accident at the hairdresser forces her to shave off all her hair and realize that maybe there’s more to life than just surface-level appearances.
In the video she shared with fans on Tuesday night, Sanaa rubs her newly shaved scalp saying, “I feel so light, I could fly away,” filming it from various angles before blowing a kiss at the camera.
Throughout August she’s also run the gamut of hairstyles, including a brushed out natural afro, which she then bleached an icy blonde, styling the look both straight and curly. But all of that time in the salon chair and all of that harsh hair dye and chemical processing was really just leading up to this big reveal and the bold choice to shave it all off. At the very least, that’s definitely one way to make those Nappily Ever After call times for hair and makeup a little more reasonable.
