Is your go-to liner look feeling a little stale these days? If you answered “yes,” don’t panic! We’ve got your ultimate cat-eye inspo, courtesy of Riley Keough’s throwback moment at the Toronto International Film Festival, so you can refresh the classic makeup look for the weekend.

Celebrity makeup artist Molly R. Stern, who created the bold liner, dishes out tips and tricks on how to replicate the beauty move at home, here.

The statement-making eyeliner, which Stern describes as “modern and clean with a serious nod to the ’60s,” was all Keough’s idea, says the pro. “I was just the lucky artist who got to help her execute it!”

To get the look, Stern opted to keep the star’s complexion clean by using only a minimal amount of Koh Gen Do Moisture Foundation to even out skin tone and boost her glow before focusing the graphic liner moment, which was initially inspired by the star’s designer gown.

“I would call it ‘Riley’s eye’ since she pushed my creative boundaries to get there,'” she tells PeopleStyle. “The idea was to add an edge to the elegance of the Chanel dress.”

Stern swiped on a thick winged line onto Keough’s lids using Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Mad Max Brown, thickening the line gradually to achieve the vision as she and Keough saw fit.

“Creating the look was a slow and methodical process,” Stern tells PeopleStyle. “We took our time to build the shape and knew when we got there that it was the exact point where beauty meets edge.”

Ready to try it at home? Stern recommends giving yourself enough time to get it perfect, as patience is crucial with a heavy eye moment like this.

“The key with a liquid liner, no matter how thin or thick you go, is to take your time,” Stern recommends. “Let it dry, then look, stand back, see what it needs. If you are too close to the mirror, you lose sight of the overall picture.”

After curling Keough’s lashes with a Shu Uemura lash curler, Stern then applied on a few coats of Burberry’s Cat Lashes Mascara in Chestnut Brown to finish the eye-popping look.

And with a swipe of L’Oréal Paris’s Colour Riche Glossy Balm in Lovely Mocha, Keough was red-carpet ready!
