'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' Star Rachel Bloom's Style Philosophy: It's 'Not Completely Giving Up On Life, But Being Myself'

The comedy actress shares how she has more fun with fashion on the red carpet, plus her signature off-duty outfit

The 22nd Annual Critics' Choice Awards - Arrivals

The hilarious Rachel Bloom, creator and star of the Golden Globe-winning musical TV comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, isn’t afraid to take fashion risks (after all, she did wear a suit and piano tie to the Creative Arts Emmy Awards this fall). But the 29-year-old star admits it took her some time to find what made her comfortable on the red carpet.

“Before, I had no sense of what my personal tastes were,” she told PEOPLE at the 22nd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards in L.A. “But now I am understanding what I like to wear, what I look good in and [how to] still be comfortable with the combination of having a stylist and being exposed to all these different clothes on the show.”

Bloom, who enjoyed being a presenter this time around at the Awards show — she won Best Actress in a Comedy Series last year — said she “played dress up last night” in her custom Christian Siriano exposed-shoulder black mini dress covered in sparkling sequins.

“I love this dress,” she explained of her look. “I’ve never worn anything like it!” When it comes to Bloom’s red carpet ensembles, she entrusts her stylist, Annabelle Harron, with the ultimate decision. “I like to defer to smarter people who are experts in their field to give me stuff to put on,” she added.

On the other hand, off the carpet, Bloom prefers a quick, easy and comfy look. “Jeans and a nice, comfortable blouse, a nice comfortable top, and some earrings and mascara,” she described as her signature day-to-day uniform. “Not completely giving up on life, but being myself.”
