Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale and costume designer Cameron Dale reveals the style rules they follow to make Aria's look really pop.

With Pretty Little Liars back on the air this summer, we’re obsessed with how the always-trendy Liars’ looks continue to inspire us now that they’ve jumped five years forward — out of high school and into the real world. The person responsible for their updated vibes is costume designer Cameron Dale, who, before working on PLL, created some of the most envy-inducing looks for Rachel Bilson on Hart of Dixie. So, a few weeks ago, PeopleStyle headed to the set of PLL to get the scoop straight from Dale and the stars themselves and find out exactly how she does it for each of the characters.

First up, we wanted to learn about the flirty, playful, highly-colorful look of Aria Montgomery (played by Lucy Hale) — watch the video above to learn about how they make it work. “We just updated Aria,” Dale says in the video, “she’s still mixing patterns and she’s still being adventurous with fashion, but in a more mature way.”

Meanwhile, Hale says it’s amazing to step into Aria’s fashion world. “That’s what I’ve always loved about Aria,” says Hale. “Her style is so different than mine, so it’s always like playing dress up.”

So what are Dale and Hale’s go-to style rules for creating Aria’s look?

“A lot of patterns are so on trend right now,” says Dale. And while Aria’s looks are usually pattern on pattern on pattern, Hale recommends customizing a look to whatever makes you comfortable. “You can take Aria’s outfit, and if you’re willing to be this daring, absolutely go for it,” says Hale. Or, “you can tone it down to whatever is in your comfort zone.”

The reason that a crossbody bag is the must-have piece is simple — it’s hands-free! “The girls are always on the lookout or running through the woods at midnight or going on a date or going to brunch after they’ve run through the woods all night,” says Hale, “so it’s just very convenient for their lifestyle, and they’re really cute.” The one seen in the video is by Street Level, and it’s available in the new PLL-inspired PeopleShop curated by Dale.

Another secret to Aria’s look is in the accessories — and for season seven, they’re more delicate than ever. “We’ve definitely paired down your jewelry,” says Dale. “We’re not afraid to mix and match metals and we just play around and have fun.” Adds Hale, “It’s still trendy pieces.”
