If you just know Portia Doubleday from Mr. Robot, you might associate her with severe, serious, corporate attire. But in real life, Doubleday loves having fun with fashion, as evidenced by her playful, risk-taking red carpet style. “I am very lucky to have the luxury of trying on lots of looks and to have an amazing stylist who makes me feel comfortable pushing the boundaries during fittings,” she told PeopleStyle of loving looks that fit her “clean, classic, feminine cuts with a vintage twist” vibe. “I always look forward to the next event to get really dressed up.

You could see that enthusiasm in full effect on Wednesday night, when she attended a pre-party for the Guggenheim International Gala wearing a Dior look with sheer elements, patent boots, an embellished bag, David Yurman jewelry and a sultry plum smoky eye.

She invited us inside her apartment, where makeup artist Bob Scott helped her get ready with Dior beauty products. Read on for our Q&A with the actress as well as tips from the makeup artist about how to get her look – and see a glimpse inside her bag and the finished product below!

Favorite red carpet look of the year (until now) and why?
My favorite red carpet look was a yellow dress I wore to the InStyle Cocktail Party. The piece was beautifully crafted and the beading against the mesh had the most incredible details – it was gorgeous. The color can be tricky to make work but we custom dyed the shoes to match the velvet on the dress to make the outfit complete.

Bob says: Our inspiration was a sultry, easy beauty look to go with her sheer black Dior dress. We decided on warm neutrals and choose between focusing on the eye or the lip. Our final decision was to play up her eyes with a soft lip so she didn’t have to do any touch-ups!

What’s your favorite way to collaborate with hairstylists/makeup artists on a red carpet look?
I always have fun with the artists I work with and they are all so gifted. It all comes down to a collaborative effort with hair, makeup and styling to tell a story. I trust them implicitly.

Bob says: First, I used Dior Forever Foundation #022, massaging it into her skin and following with Dior Capture Totale Dreamskin Perfect Skin Creator, which I pressed into her skin with the foundation for a seamless, radiant look. I perfected her skin with Dior Forever Undercover Concealer in #010 where needed. Continuing with her complexion I contoured her cheek with Diorblush Sculpt Beige Contour #003 and followed with Diorskin Nude Air Tan Healthy Glow Sun Powder #002. I then used my favorite illuminating product – Diorskin Nude Air Luminizer Powder #001 on the top of the cheekbones for a little highlight. I chose this shade as she is very fair and I wanted her cheek to look soft and sculpted – not too bronze or blush.

Do you prefer a smoky eye or bold lip, and why?
I like the pigmentation of my lips so I tend to try to accentuate my eyes. I like a smoky eye using taupe and brown tones to complement my blue eyes.

Bob says: For her eyes, I used the pearlescent terracotta shade from the 5 Couleur Eyeshadow Palette #767 Inflame all over the lid and brought the same shade to the lower lash line using a smaller brush – only half away across the bottom lid. Then on the top lash line I went in with Diorshow Pro-Liner Waterproof #182 Pro Purple from the outer corner to the halfway point of her eye lid at a slant to create the appearance of a lifted eye and then blended to soften the edges to complete her diffused cat eye using the lightest shade from the eye palette.

Bob says: To fill in her brows I used Dior All-In-Brow 3D Long-Wear Brow Contour Kit #001 Brown. The last touch to her eyes was using Diorshow Iconic Mascara #090 Black on both the top and bottom lashes.

What are your getting-ready rituals?
Playing music, drinking a good cup of coffee and definitely playing with my dog, Logan. There are always lots of laughs and weird dance moves while I get ready too.

Bob says: We wanted to keep the look on her lips light and easy so we used the Dior Addict Lip Glow #004 Coral for a dewy, balmy lip without too much shine to bring her whole look together and subtly complementing the eyes. She left with it n her purse to use for the rest of the night.
