Penélope Cruz Once Styled Salma Hayek's Hair in the Dark
Who knew the actress has a secret talent for hairdressing?
Penélope Cruz is clearly a woman of many talents. Not only is she an award-winning actress, producer, model, and fashion designer, but she also just happens to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. And incase she didn’t already have enough on her plate, she also has one more secret talent hidden up her sleeve.
Growing up, Cruz spent a great deal of time in the hair salon where her mother worked, and apparently some of that second-hand cosmetological knowledge stuck. In fact, she’s so good with a brush and a can of hairspray, she can even craft a camera-ready coif in total darkness.
On Tuesday, at the Cinema Society and Chopard’s New York screening of Ma Ma, produced by and starring Penélope, the actress owned up to testing out her styling prowess on friend Salma Hayek one time when she was in a pinch, and in a pitch-black room no less. She told PEOPLE, “[Salma] was getting ready for a premiere and her lights went out, and I had to do her hair in the dark.”
During a recent Times Talk, Cruz also described the salon where her own mother worked as her first acting school. “I was learning about all the treatments that they did,” she told the New York Times. “But it was my first acting school because all of these women were playing characters. They enter one way, and leave a completely different person. After telling my mother all their secrets about their private lives and their husband or their lover, they were completely transformed after the treatment.”

“It was a hair salon, but it was also like being a psychologist’s office,” she continued telling the Times. “I was hiding there behind all my books, but I was studying them. I was studying human behavior. It was so long ago, I was probably eight or nine, but I still remember.”
But as for the truly pressing question on top of everyone’s mind: Does Cruz clip her own picture perfect tresses? She confessed, “No, I don’t cut it, it’s easier to do on somebody else!”
That being said, we’re still holding out for Cruz to open up her own salon in the very near future.
