The Final Five Came to Our Office to Talk Beauty Products (You, Too, Can Get Laurie Hernandez's Cat Eye)
As the breakout stars of the Rio Olympics, the gold-medal winning U.S. gymnastics team worked hard, made famous friends and even managed to squeeze in some beach time in between jaw-dropping athletic turns on the vault, bars, beam and mat. And they inspired plenty of style moments as well (just ask the New York Times!). Does it bother them to be looked at as beauty icons as well as champion athletes? Nah: "We look forward to doing our makeup and hair before we go so it’s like a fun part for us," Biles says.
With that in mind, we chatted with the Final Five to get the scoop on the beauty looks that had the country buzzing. Before leaving Rio, the gymnasts couldn't wait to arrive in N.Y.C. and order up a slice: "We're going straight to New York – gonna hit up that pizza, man!" Simone told People. True to their word, the gymnasts dug in while they shared their beauty secrets and signed copies of People.
Laurie, affectionally called "the human emoji," won an individual silver on beam -- and also won all of America's hearts with her adorable pre-floor routine wink. Key to the wink's success? That perfectly defined cat eye liner. You probably can't replicate her moves at home, but you can give her sharp swipe your best attempt with her Stila liquid eyeliner. "Basically I just start in the corner of my eye and press into it," she told PeopleStyle. "It glides perfectly almost 99 percent of the time. Maybe 98. The other 2 percent I have to wipe off with a baby wipe and keep trying!"
The superstar, who won two golds and a bronze, added to the shine around her neck with the red, white and blue shimmer on her eyes. "My [home] teammates got it for me like two years ago, and I was like, I'm gonna take this just in case," she says of the product, which "comes in a tube of every color." Does she have to worry about a rogue sparkle landing in her eye as she's executing an Amanar? No, she says, but "I am used to seeing sometimes glitter shadows [out of the corner of my eye]!"
You already know how to get her sassy-but-immovable topknot; now discover exactly how to get her light blue liner. Well, kinda. "It's like a gel felt pen thingy. Liquid liner, but it's not. It literally looks like a lip gloss brush but you put it on your eye." (We are going to need to investigate.) And sweatproof isn't a consideration, she shares: "We don’t really sweat that much when we compete. Just for a second!"
Gabby's take on a red lip was inspired by her competition ensemble: "The leotard was red and burgundy -- I found a lipstick that was a dark brown and I was like, Oh, perfect match!" (Want your own perfect match? Try CoverGirl's Katy Kat Matte in Maroon Meow.)
Madison nabbed a silver on bars in addition to her team gold, and also had a winning hair look for every event. And there was a method to the mane-ness. "When I was packing them at camp, Aly was like you put a new ribbon for each leo?" she said. "Yeah, I roll up my leos and I put the ribbon and I tie it on the scrunchie and I just put it around the leo so it’s compact." And she does her own braid each time: "I've gotten really fast at it now, but I like it to be perfect. Sometimes I have to redo it, but usually it takes five to 10 minutes."
