Olivia Wilde can pull off pretty much any beauty look. But there’s one the actress’ fiancé Jason Sudeikis isn’t a huge fan of, she tells People in this week’s issue.

When it comes to a bold lip, “he doesn’t love it,” says the 32-year-old Vinyl star, who admits to occasionally putting on red lipstick and black liner for date night to “do my best Sophia Loren impression.”

Yet Sudeikis’ lack of love for vibrant lip shades doesn’t faze Wilde, who adds: “All men are terrified of lipstick. But girls don’t get dressed up for guys; we get dressed up for girls. So I wear whatever I think looks best.”

But most often, she pairs a cat eye (which Wilde mastered after watching her mother create the classic look) with a sheer formula “that I know won’t need a ton of maintenance and has a hint of color so I’m not totally washed out.” The Revlon spokeswoman’s favorite: Pink Truffle from the brand’s Super Lustrous Lipstick Sheers Collection.

Wilde credits her experimental side to years spent collaborating with makeup pros. “I like to be bold on the red carpet, and the benefit of working with so many brilliant makeup artists is that I get to ask a lot of questions and say, ‘okay so when I go out next week to that birthday party I am going to try my own version of this with my own tools.'”

For day, the mom-to-be’s DIY glam sessions are all about enhancing her natural beauty. “I don’t leave the house without a little foundation, concealer and mascara [on]. I think that for a lot of women it’s not about disguising yourself, it’s just about giving yourself a little bump in confidence.”

And in her purse, the self-proclaimed “pack horse” carries a few touch up products, among them “concealer, something for my lips and sometimes an eyebrow [pencil] if I don’t trust myself not to rub my hand on my forehead in distress and destroy them!”

Whether Wilde is getting ready to run errands or for the red carpet, she maintains the same beauty philosophy: “The older I get, the more I get to know what works best for me. Makeup is not about changing who you are, it’s about understanding your face and highlighting your best features.”
