Octavia Spencer dazzled at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, but the actress admits that slipping into her Tadashi Shoji gown took a little extra work.

“I was not a Girl Scout, but I tried to be very prepared,” she joked on the Ellen DeGeneres Show Tuesday. “I triple-Spanxed, which is not good. Spanx really, really work, but you don’t need to overdo it.”

Though the actress cut a fine figure Sunday — and picked up the award for best supporting actress — she wasn’t feeling so great during the post-SAG celebrations. “I could not party that night because I was being pinched in places I didn’t know it was possible,” she joked.

Luckily she had a girlfriend who felt her pain: fellow nominee Melissa McCarthy (who’s had a major Spanx moment of her own). “I was like, ‘Oh my god Melissa, I’m about to die, my Spanx are killing me,'” Spencer recalled. “And she said, ‘I just went to the bathroom and took mine off.'”
