Obsessed or Hot Mess: The Beauty Edition
THE BRAIDED FAUX-HAWK
We’ve got news for all you ladies with super-short hair: You don’t have a forgo the pretty summer plait trend! Check out Jaime Pressly’s dramatic French braid (then decide whether it’s for you).
Blink and you’ll miss them! Zoë Kravitz’s teeny dots add a bit of intrigue to her minimalist makeup look.
THE FISHTAIL TOPKNOT
For some of us, braided buns might feel like the ghosts of ballet classes past, but Jessica Szohr’s half-up-half-down do is totally modern.
VAMPY LIPS IN SUMMER
Is it just us or does deep wine-hued pout feel like the makeup equivalent of putting on a wool sweater in the middle of July?
THE COILED BUN
If this hairstyle on had a Pinterest inspiration board, the photos would totally include: a snake, a hot water pipe wrapped in rope at a hipster restaurant and a cruller from Dunkin’ Donuts.
The cat eye Kaley Cuoco is sporting is so extreme that it makes us want to refer to all other cat eyes as kitten eyes.
sees your slicked-back hair and raises you one.
THE BABY STEP TOWARD CORNROWS
Somewhere in between a single French braid and coming back from a Mexican vacation with a whole head of plaits is Maria Menounos’s three-braid style.
(HALF OF) A CHEERLEADER PONY
If cheerleaders – and their perky ponytails – always give it 100%, we’d say Rita Ora is giving it about 50%, leaving half of her long hair down while the rest is pulled up high.
Color-block dresses: good. Color-block highlights: bad. Color-block makeup: We haven’t come to a verdict (but is certainly doing her best to convince us).
THE LEANING TOPKNOT OF PISA
Tourists come from all over the world to see the French actress Léa Seydoux’s off-kilter topknot, posing in front of it and pretending to hold the thing up. No, they don’t actually, but this should definitely become a meme.
BLACK POINTY NAILS FOR SPRING
Nothing says warm weather, budding flowers and a new season like a pretty pastel mani. But if you prefer nails that are more scary than sweet, go with sharp talons like Kylie Jenner’s.
VISIBLE (ON PURPOSE) BOBBY PINS
We’ve spent so many years perfecting the art of using these without letting them show that we’re going to need to take a minute to process decision to make bobby pins a very obvious part of her style.
If anyone’s capable of making this a thing (and not just at Coachella), it’s the Kardashian-Jenners. So, thank (or blame) them when you start seeing your friends do it.
If Gossip Girl had stayed on the air, we have a feeling that the costume designers would have been forced to get creative so as not to repeat any of Blair Waldorf’s headbands and she would have ended up wearing something like this design seen on Rita Ora.
Nearly 100,000 fans double-tapped on Bella Thorne’s sparkly metallic arches when she posted the photo (from a shoot) on Instagram. But do you heart this look as much as everyone else?
You know what they say: Blues have more fun. Wait, that’s not how the expression goes. Regardless, seems pretty happy with her primary color mane.
We love Celeb Style Council member Jamie Chung’s lip color. But maybe that’s just because it reminds us of drinking a nice bottle of Pinot Noir.
It’s hard to tell if we’re looking at a #ThrowbackThursday picture from the dark days before dry shampoo … or if is doing the whole gelled-‘til-it-looks-wet thing.
THE DECONSTRUCTED BRAID
She’s come undone. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Chloë Grace Moretz wears a messy braid, interwoven with smaller, tighter braids, pulled over her shoulder.
Well, that’s one way to fight frizz. apparently didn’t learn from mistake because she returned from her vacation sporting the severe style.
Just like the plastic hair clips we used to wear when we were six! Only, you know, not plastic and probably not sold in a pack of 50 for $1.99. Also, we never rocked ours with head-to-toe Chanel, as does.
DARK LIPSTICK IN SUMMER
We’re more partial to white wines when it’s hot out, but Bella Thorne kicks off July with a Bordeaux. A Bordeaux-hued lip color, that is.
GLITTERY EYE MAKEUP
People rave about Whitney Cumming’s sense of humor, but when it comes to this shimmery shadow, we just assume she’s going to a rave.
You know how the term “air tie” refers to a button-down that’s buttoned all the way to the collar? Well, we’re dubbing Naya Rivera’s hairstyle the “air headband.”
HEAD SCARVES ON DUDES
In new song, he sings, “Fold a scarf, Moroccan red, and tie your hair behind your head.” So maybe we were wrong and this song isn’t about after all, but rather it’s about himself!
Scientists! You need to study hair (shown here at the SAG Awards), because it’s apparently capable of defying gravity.
PASTEL BLUE SHADOW
We love that while most women permanently retired blue shadow along with slap bracelets and Trapper Keepers years ago, Elle Fanning and are bringing back the retro makeup look full-force.
THE FEMALE FAUX HAWK
Let’s hear it for the boy’s … inspired mane. gives her supershort crop a playful lift and makes at least a few editors here momentarily consider chopping off their long locks.
OMBRé MEETS DIP-DYE
Can’t choose between Hollywood’s two biggest hair color trends? Neither can , who showed off a high-contrast hybrid of both looks at the SAG Awards.
What do you do when you’ve already colored your hair from gray to blonde to lavender? Move on to your eyebrows. That’s what Kelly Osbourne did, Tweeting about her new lightened-up brows, “I look like an alien!”
Remember when, back in middle school, girls would use Wite-Out to paint their nails? is out to prove it’s not just a look for 13-year-olds who are bored in class. (If you’re going to rock it, stick to actual nail polish, not correction fluid.)
THE HAIR ROLL
Hey, by the middle of summer we’re all suffering from ponytail fatigue. So we give props to for coming up with a fresh way to keep her hair off of her face. Her pinup-inspired front bun is certainly eye-catching, but doesn’t it also sort of remind you of a puff pastry you’d find in a bakery?
HOT PINK LIPS
Unlike a nude pout, lips the color of Barbie’s dream house are high maintenance and pack a major punch. As long as you do as does and stick with a shade that’s in the fuchsia family and avoid frosted finishes, you’ll look girlie, but not silly.
If you do a lot of typing, texting or piano-playing, ultra-long purple-pink nails are probably not for you. But if you’re looking to make a statement with your hands, we say go for it.
THE "MISSING PIECE" UPDO
A mussed-up, just-out-of-bed hairstyle, like the one Nikki Reed wears, can be utterly sexy and we normally prefer it to a sleek and severe look. She takes it to the next level of messiness, though, by channeling My So-Called Life’s Rayanne McGrath (ever notice she always had this do?) and leaving an entire section of hair out.
Yes, this is really happening. Lately, lip liner has made a quiet comeback with lots of ladies rediscovering the power of a nude pencil (it adds definition in a subtle way). Maria Menounos, however, pairs her peachy gloss with a much darker mocha liner.
I DREAM OF JEANNIE'S PONY
Funky colors aside, hairstyle translates surprisingly well to non-red carpet situations. All you need is an elastic and a flat iron. Now get someone to put on “Whip My Hair” and do as Willow Smith says.
TANGERINE TANGO SHADOW
Pantone gave this citrus shade the Color of the Year award in 2012 and since then, makeup artists have been giving it a lot of face time – literally. Marion Cotillard contrasts her pale complexion by wearing it on her lids, but also under her bottom row of lashes.
THE POOF 2.0
Snooki’s got nothing on Lana del Rey, who pushes the envelope with a sky-scraping smooth waterfall mane. Either she used an entire bottle of hair spray, she ordered the Bumpit off an infomercial or she’s got a soda can hidden under that bump.
