Michael and Nicole Phelps capped off their monumental 2016 the best way they knew how: by throwing another wedding. The couple celebrated their nuptials for a third time with a celebratory reception on New Year’s Eve.
Mr. and Mrs. Phelps welcomed 2017 alongside their family and friends at a big, black-tie party held at the Waldorf Astoria Arizona Biltmore Resort.
“We both come from great families and have a lot of friends so it was a challenge trying to figure out how we could include everybody,” Nicole told Brides magazine of hosting their third wedding. “As we talked through a lot of different ideas, we just kept coming back to the idea of doing a small and intimate wedding in Cabo, and hosting a larger celebration at home so we could include all of our family and friends.”
When it came to selecting her dress, Nicole turned to Israeli designer Julie Vino, who also created the ornate, cap-sleeve design she wore for her October 29 wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The figure-hugging, long-sleeve lace gown featured an illusion neckline, crystal embellishments and a statement-making train, making it not only the ultimate NYE wedding dress, but the perfect complement to the “Gatsby-themed” vibe of the affair.
“When I saw it for the first time I knew it was perfect,” Nicole shared with Brides of the gown.
For his part, Michael wore a classic black tuxedo which matched baby Boomer’s suit.
“Within an hour he was passed out,” Nicole said of the couple’s 7-month-old son.
Michael and Nicole first wed in a secret, intimate backyard ceremony in Paradise Valley, Arizona, on June 13, before Michael won his record-breaking 23rd gold medal at his final Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“We know that 2016 was a year that would be hard to replicate,” Nicole told Brides. “We look forward to a new year and building our family for many years to come. We know that the future will be bright and we are thankful to have celebrated with so many of our loved ones!”
